Today most fatal fires occur at night when you are sleeping. A working smoke alarm will alert you when smoke is detected.

Equip your home with Smoke Alarms

The Ontario Fire Code requires that every home have a working Smoke Alarm.

Choose a Smoke Alarm

When purchasing a Smoke Alarm you have some options to choose from.

Some are electrically connected to your home power system. Others are battery operated. Some are both electrical and battery operated.

Each sleeping area should have a Smoke Alarm

Newer Smoke Alarms have expiry dates, so replace them when they expire

Remember to replace Smoke Alarms that are 10 years old or older

Where to install Smoke Alarms

Since smoke rises, it is highly recommended that you install Smoke Alarms on the ceiling.

Test your Smoke Alarms

You should test all your Smoke Alarms on a monthly basis

To test simply press the test button

If you have pets, you may want to have them outside during the test

Replace Batteries Yearly

When you hear a chirp very minute (low battery warning) from your Smoke Alarm replace your battery immediately for that Smoke Alarm.

When you change your clocks in the fall for daylight savings always install a new battery in each Smoke Alarm

Dust can clog a Smoke Alarm, so you can gently vacuum them using a soft brush.

Ensure the power is off for electrically connected Smoke Alarms before you vacuum

Always test your Smoke Alarms after cleaning is completed

Practice your escape plan with very member of your house on a regularly basis.
